1. To narrow your focus I have
assigned #30 guiding questions designed to give each of you the background and
expertise expected of a Junior Ranger. You will each assume the
role of Cartographer, Historian, and Biologist/Geologist so participation is
crucial to your groups success. Some of the questions may not
be easy, but you will be able to share your findings within your groups and you will develop a
thorough understanding of Yosemite. Cartographer: You will be in charge of planning the route for the trip. You will also need to to become proficient with topographic maps so that you can navigate safely in Yosemite. Your research will also include becoming familiar with the park rules, locating places of interest, and finding lodging, camping and picnic locations. Historian: Your job is to identify and trace the origins of Yosemite as a National Park. You will also be able to cite the contributions of John Muir, Ansel Adams, and Native Americans that first settled here over 8000 year ago. Discuss what life was like for early settlers and explain why conservation and preservation is so important. Biologist/Geologist: You will be in charge of identifying species in the parks plant and animal population, as well as their habitat. You should also be able to identify which plants or animals may be harmful to humans. As a geologist you will research the origins of the magnificent scenery and then form a hypothesis on what forces formed the park millions of years ago. 2. After your group completes these questions and you are confident with the answers you will compose your own 300 word response that addresses an Essential Question about Yosemite's future. You may use all available resources and the information gathered from the guiding questions to support the facts in your paper. 3. As a group compose a Storyboard to organize a Power Point presentation based on your research. Practice your presentation several times and edit as needed. Make sure you share your knowledge. Remember that you are responsible for teaching, sharing, and conveying your information effectively to your peers. 4. To further comprehend the principal of magnetic north assemble in your groups and construct a simple compass National Geographic Kids Magazine: Then take a self Cartography Quiz 5. After successful completion of this WebQuest permission slips will go out. The trip to Yosemite is scheduled for Saturday, November 6th.
